The aim of this Joint ACA/PromoCon Award is to spotlight products, which are pleasing in appearance and satisfactory in performance, and to encourage manufacturers to give attention to the appeal factor at the design stage of new products.

Judging Panel

The judging panel comprises representatives from The Bladder and Bowel Foundation,  The Continence and Skin Technology Group, Association for Continence Advice  and PromoCon

bullet point Are they innovative?

The 12th ‘Look Good, Feel Good’ Award (2009)

The ACA Conference was recently held at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry. The event saw the presentation of the 12th annual PromoCon / ACA 'Look Good, Feel Good' (LGFG) Award to Shreddies for their Flatulence Filtering Underwear.

The underwear range is constructed with a 100% activated carbon back panel and gusset. These are totally concealed within the underwear thus disguising their function. Any flatulent odours pass through the inner panels into the carbon filter which has a structure to filter the gas, trapping any offensive odours.

Judges commented on the innovative design of the product:

" fab idea, good quality product, great styling, could save many a marriage !!! Well needed product, fantastic innovation"

Only products that are exhibited at the ACA Conference have been launched since the last ACA Conference or which have not been exhibited at an ACA Conference previously are eligible for the award.

The winning product, HydroSil discreet is a female hydrophilic intermittent catheter with features that make it soft and comfortable to use. The unique outer layer becomes slippery when wet, for virtually friction-free insertion and removal. A sachet of sterile water is provided inside each pouch to help keep the catheter free from external contamination. The catheter is made of silicone, so there are no toxins or disposal concerns.

Judges commented on the innovative design of the product…”A very attractive catheter, user oriented, Love the mirror, very soft and easy to use.”

Hugh McLeod, UK General Manager stated…”The team at Rochester Medical paid particular attention to consumer needs when designed and developing the HydroSil discreet female ISC catheter, to try to ensure that it was presented to new patients in a less threatening way than many sterile medical products, choosing pink packaging with silver writing rather than the usual black on white and supporting the product with helpful accessories, training packs and an informative, easy to read guide to use. Winning the ‘Look Good, Feel Good’, Award is a great honour and an endorsement that will help us inform health care professionals and the general public about the benefits of our technology, especially about how comfortable and gentle HydroSil discreet is to use”.

Runners Up

In 2nd place – Clinifix from CliniMed. This unique multi-purpose catheter tube holder that fits like a second skin can help resolve the problems associated with tape and straps whilst reducing the risk of infection and trauma caused by inadvertent medical tube movement. Clinifix is made from a skin-friendly hydrocolloid that can remain in place for up to seven days without affecting skin integrity, when it has reached its full user wear time it will peel off easily.

In 3rd place – The StatLock foley from Bard. This is a new stabilisation strap free device which locks the foley catheter in place, stabilises the catheter and eliminates any chance of a sudden pull. Designed for comfort and security, it reduces the risk of pulling on the foley catheter which can cause pain and trauma, and provides a comfortable, secure and hygienic placement of the catheter away from areas of the body that could lead to bacteria contaminating the surface of the catheter and there is no need to wear an elasticated strap around the thigh which can slip or restrict blood flow. The StatLock foley is designed to be worn for up to seven days after which it should be replaced with a new one.
