Continence Promotion and Management in the Care Home Setting: Products and Equipment which are Cost Effective and Enhance Quality of Life.

Date: Tuesday 11th March 2008 9.30am - 4.00pm

Care Homes for Older People - National Minimum Standards recommend service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. However, a survey conducted by the Royal College of Nursing (2005) found that many care home staff were unaware of the range of specialist toileting and continence promotion products that are available.

Continence care in care homes takes time, energy and dedication. When successfully achieved it brings dignity and peace of mind to residents and a sense of achievement to staff. Simple measures can sometimes bring the most effective results, but staff need to be aware of the range of equipment and resources that are available. This may involve greater input from other healthcare professionals, external to the home.

The training session will highlight evidence based best practice, identify resources and organisations to support staff, guide delegates through the product maze and discuss options for the more complex service users, such as the bariatric resident.

A product exhibition will accompany this study day.

Presenters: Julie Vickerman, Research Occupational Therapist
Debra Evans, Information Manager/ Product Specialist

Target Group: Social Services Care Managers, Commission for Social Care Inspection Unit Staff (CSCI), Care Home Owners, Managers, Senior Nursing Staff and Care Assistants.

Cost: £45 (includes lunch and refreshments)
